This qualification is a competence-based NVQ intended to confirm that an individual can carry out formwork carpentry tasks in a real workplace environment (fabrication, erection and striking of formwork, repairs, slinging/signalling duties and relevant health & safety). It’s designed to give industry-recognised evidence of competence so learners can work on construction sites and progress to higher/supervisory roles.
Health, safety & welfare on construction sites (safe working practices).
Information, quantities and communication (reading drawings, taking measurements).
Building methods and construction technology relevant to formwork.
Fabrication, repair and maintenance of formwork panels.
Workplace-based delivery and assessment is the norm — assessments occur on real work activities.
Learning may include a mix of: on-the-job coaching, short centre-based practical sessions, knowledge checks, and guided portfolio building.
Some centres offer blended support (face-to-face + remote/online evidence capture), but the competence evidence must come from the workplace.
Renewal & refresher NVQ certificates themselves do not typically ‘expire’ — once awarded the NVQ remains valid as evidence of competence
Work safely and in compliance with health, safety, and welfare regulations.
Collaborate and communicate with others to establish efficient working methods.
Interpret work instructions, drawings, and specifications to handle resources properly.
NVQs can be completed quickly if evidence is ready, but for most learners an on-site NVQ Level 2 commonly takes ~3–12 months from registration to certificate depending on workplace opportunities and assessment scheduling.
Trainees and workers already carrying out (or preparing to carry out) formwork carpentry tasks on construction sites.
People aiming to prove competence for a CSCS/skilled worker route, move into site operative roles, or progress to supervisory/Level 3 qualifications.
No formal academic entry requirements in most awarding-body specs — learners can start without previous qualifications
Competency-based assessment conducted in the workplace by an approved assessor
